Brick City Urban Farms

FAQ

Q: What happens to the delicious food that you grow?

A: Well, we plan on donating a portion of the food, as well as selling at nearby farmers markets and restaurants, while also developing a co-op program. For more information on farmers markets and co-ops in your area (assuming NJ is your area), check out http://www.state.nj.us/jerseyfresh/

If New Jersey is not where you call home, then this website might just be for you: http://apps.ams.usda.gov/FarmersMarkets/

Q: What are those boxes that you’re growing in?

A: They are called Earthboxes. Their website says, “The patented EarthBox was developed by commercial farmers and proven in the lab and on the farm. Our maintenance-free, award-winning, high-tech growing system controls soil conditions, eliminates guesswork and more than doubles the yield of a conventional garden-with less fertilizer, less water and virtually no effort.” Yep, pretty great.

Q: So what are you growing?

A: A lot of things. Tomatoes, corn, hot peppers, sweet peppers, squash, cucumber, zucchini, eggplant, lettuce, chard, beans, pumpkins, okra, basil, oregano, and parsley. We’re always experimenting with new plants too.

Q: That sounds amazing! How can I help?

A: The easiest way to help is to keep eating locally grown and environmentally friendly food, and convince two friends to follow your lead. Otherwise, theres always work to be done on a farm, and if you’d like to volunteer than e-mail us at info@brickcityurbanfarms.org and we’ll inform you of any opportunities that arise.

I have four Earthboxes on my back deck. They are truly amazing as they enable you to grow food where you really could not before. We have tomatoes (lots and lots!), squash, gourds, strawberries, peppers, and lettuce for much of the year. I love my Earthboxes and am delighted to see them so well-used for this!
